AC Repair By All HVAC Air Conditioning Solutions May 1, 2025 7 min read

California's summer heat arrives fast, and an air conditioner that worked fine in spring can fail completely by July. Most AC failures give clear warning signs weeks or even months before the system breaks down completely. Knowing what to look for can save you from an emergency repair call during the hottest week of the year.

Our certified technicians across San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Long Beach, and Oakland see the same failure patterns every summer. Here are the seven warning signs that tell us a system is about to fail. Learn about the mechanics of air conditioning from Wikipedia's overview of how these systems work.

1. Warm Air Blowing From the Vents

If your AC is running but pushing warm or room-temperature air through the vents, the problem is usually low refrigerant from a leak or a failing compressor. Neither issue resolves on its own. The EPA requires that refrigerant handling be done by a certified professional.

2. Reduced Airflow

Weak airflow from your vents usually points to a clogged filter, a failing blower motor, or blocked or leaking ductwork. Reduced airflow forces the system to run longer to reach the set temperature, which increases wear on every component. Review our HVAC maintenance guide for filter change recommendations.

3. Frequent On-and-Off Cycling

An AC that cycles on and off more frequently than normal (called short-cycling) is a sign of electrical issues, a refrigerant problem, or a system that was incorrectly sized for your home. Short-cycling puts excessive stress on the compressor and can lead to complete compressor failure if ignored.

4. Unusually High Energy Bills

If your electricity costs have climbed significantly without any change in how you use your AC, the system is working harder than it should. Dirty coils, low refrigerant, a failing capacitor, or restricted airflow all force the system to consume more power for less cooling output.

5. Ice Forming on the Unit

Ice on your outdoor unit or on the copper refrigerant lines is never normal during operation. It almost always indicates low refrigerant or severely restricted airflow. A frozen system cannot cool your home effectively, and running it while frozen can cause compressor damage.

6. Strange Noises During Operation

A properly functioning AC runs quietly. Banging, grinding, squealing, or rattling noises during operation indicate something has come loose or worn out inside the system. Grinding or squealing from the outdoor unit often points to a failing fan motor or compressor bearing.

7. Water or Moisture Where It Should Not Be

Active water leaks, pooling around the indoor unit, or moisture on walls and ceilings near your system are signs of a clogged condensate drain line or a refrigerant leak. Both need prompt attention to prevent water damage and mold growth.

What to Do If You Notice Any of These Signs

Do not wait to see if the problem gets better on its own. AC problems that are minor in spring become expensive repairs in summer. The Department of Energy recommends addressing any signs of reduced performance before the peak cooling season begins.
